I run bind9 in Debian. On my local test OpenVZ box, it takes abount 3 meg real and 30 meg virtual memory. But on my vpsville account, it takes twice the virtual memory, consuming nearly all of my 64 meg guaranteed allocation.

The configuration of bind9 is exactly the same on both boxes, I rsynced them to be sure.

I see the beancounter limits are different on my vpsville account, but I don't know which one is causing bind9 to eat up more virtual memory. Any ideas?

Here is what my vpsville account looks like before and after staring bind9

We don't use bind on our servers as its overkill for us, we use maradns. I suggest you check out one of the many bind alternates.

Maradns uses about 3 MB, supports SPF and rDNS shortcuts.

Its possible bind was written to use virtual memory, which of course won't work very well in a vps. All memory is real on a VPS and you can't specify what is virtual and what isn't.

Virtual memory will kill a shared disk so to keep things snappy all memory allocated to your vps is real RAM, not disk memory.
