I'd like to secure my lxadmin HIB plan but noticed iptables doesn't come installed.
There's some good tutorials at the lxlabs wiki for iptables, csf and apf, but I'm wondering what the VPSVille recommendations are.

Which firewall to use, etc. Specifically, which firewalls will the "Clear Firewall" in the VPSVille panel actually clear on a HIB vps? I'd like to stay on the beaten path, as it were.

Hi,

The basic firewall here is a good start. You'll have to open a few more ports, like 7778 to start with depending on what you actually use: http://forum.vpsville.ca/index.php?t=msg&th=48

The clear firweall command clear's all iptables rules, so it doesn't matter how you created them, it will clear them in an instant if you lock yourself out by mistake.

iptables appears to not be installed. Is there any special considerations as far as me installing it myself? I don't want to break it Smile

No, its enabled in the kernel. You can't break it.

The application should be installed in all templates, which template doesn't have it installed already?

HIB 1 (cheapest LXadmin on CentOS package)
When I type "iptables" it says bash: iptables: command not found

Hey I also am a new HIB plan customer and want to figure out what I need to do to secure my server. I thought I would be protected as it is a vps and VPSville must have their servers secured but it seem that I need a firewall setup is that correct?

What types of security measures must a new account user take to remain safe and secure.

I see the link with guidelines posted here is broken. Advice is appreciated.

Hi there, and welcome.

The link in this post has been fixed. You can use that script but you'll need to modify it to keep these ports open on LxAdmin:

TCP ports: 1,21,22,25,53,80,110,111,143,443,465,993,995, 7776, 7777, 7778,7779,3306

UDP ports: 53,55880

If you need help with this, open a support ticket and we'll throw up the firewall for you.

Here's another good example that's specific to the Kloxo HIB plan. Be aware that by default all outgoing ports are blocked in this example.
